Background
Lax & Co Solicitors is a new start-up practice established in the spring of 2007 by three partners, Mike Lax, Stuart Dench and Tom Crampton.
The firm provides legal advice on all aspects of Shipping and International Trade including contract of carriage disputes, sale and purchase issues and ship salvage and casualty work.
The partners have strong commercial ties with law firms around the world, and with a loyal client base their portfolio is growing rapidly.
Brief
Lax & Co approached Lateral Solutions after looking at various ways to quickly and effectively set up the company’s entire IT and communications system within new offices.
Lateral Solutions was commissioned to analyse their business needs and then recommend and implement systems that would be delivered on time, on budget, and provide all necessary functionality and scalability for future growth. Of fundamental importance was the need to provide multiple channels for remote data access and robust contingencies for disaster recovery.
The brief stipulated that vital legacy data regarding client work be safely and swiftly migrated into the business operations to ensure smooth business continuity.
Challenge
Within a strict deadline, Lateral Solutions co-ordinated the installation of the network infrastructure, Windows 2003 servers, and successfully managed the installation of a British Telecom-based telephony system.
Lateral Solutions also liaised with third-party specialist practice management software providers to ensure the timely migration of data.
Lax & Co required the IT platform to support a fully mobile operation which included push e-mail to the Blackberry smart phones and remote access to the office through their laptops via a terminal services server. This was all successfully completed.
Finally, a sophisticated dictation system was recommended and installed.
Results
Lateral Solutions delivered on time and budget, and their work has helped Lax & Co get off to a flying start.
